How Much Does It Cost to Develop an Android App?

Our business is connecting people with mobile app ideas with those who possess the technical skill to bring them to the market.  We talk to lots of people with ideas for Android apps and we get some of the same questions on a regular basis.  If we had an FAQ that could consist entirely of a single question, it would be this:  “How much will it cost to develop my Android app idea?”  It’s the question that’s on everyone’s minds, and if we had a nickel for every time we heard it, we’d probably be able to afford to develop quite a few apps of our own.

So, how much does it cost to develop an Android app?  You’re probably not going to like the answer, but unfortunately it’s the only correct one:  “it depends.”  The question itself is a lot like asking how much it costs to buy a home or a car.  Do you require a beachfront home in the Hamptons and a Lamborghini in the garage, or can you make do with a first-floor studio apartment and a ten year-old Hyundai (or, better yet, public transportation)?

One of the first hits on a Google search of the question yields a daunting answer:  $35,000.  Alex Ahlund, former CEO of AppVee and AndroidApps, and later an advisor to Appolicious, wrote a guest blog article about app sales on TechCrunch.  According to that article, a survey of 96 mobile app developers showed the average cost to develop an app was $6,453.  Some set the range for basic mobile apps from anywhere between $3,000 and $8,000, others between $20,000 and $70,000, and still others suggest that it can be done for as little as $1,000 or, failing that, “just pay a high school kid to do it for pizza.”

The lesson here is that you’ll never know how much it cost to develop an Android app until you speak to a developer and explain precisely what it is you want your app to do.  We’ll cover the nuts and bolts of the Android development process in later blog posts, but the good news is that services like ours are designed to put you in touch with Android developers who will provide you with accurate quotes – for free – once they know what they’re getting into.  So, if you’re looking to develop an Android app, either drop us an e-mail or give us a call at 877.983.APPS (2777).
