Refining Your Android App Idea (Part 2)

Last week we discussed the first two questions you need to ask yourself before you discuss your app idea with an Android developer.  We’re going to assume that your answers to those questions motivated you to continue pursuing the realization of your app idea, in which case you’ll also need to consider the following:

  • Is there a market for my Android app?  For anyone considering the launch of a new product on the market, the simplest and most effective thing to do is ask the following questions:  Do I need this?  Would I use this?  Would this product improve my life, even in some small but meaningful way?  If the competition is weak, or if it doesn’t exist – that is, if your app hasn’t already been developed and yet speaks to some nagging human need – then your chances for success in the marketplace increase exponentially.

Of course, we strongly recommend that any business hoping to be taken seriously in the digital age launch an app to accompany its products and services – a restaurant, for example – and if that’s the sort of Android app you’re hoping to develop, then its success will depend not only on the quality of the app itself, but also the quality of the food you serve.

  • Will I be able to sell my Android app?  If you’re still on track after answering the preceding questions, you might just be ready to meet with a developer and get your app in the Android Market.  We’ll cover monetization models for Android apps next week, but depending on the nature of your app idea, it’s well worth remembering that the mobile application marketplace is a global phenomenon.  Distimo recently released a report revealing staggering growth in the app market in China.  More than twice as many people in India use mobile phones than have access to running water.  You never know what sort of apps might speak to the needs of such a population, but it’s well worth considering when you’re developing your own mobile app.  Think big, like the mountains that surround our home base in southwest Colorado.
